Implement incident metering for auto-exposure - #631
Auto-exposure metered the light each surface reflects and exposed it to middle grey, so a white wall in dim light came out grey and everything in front of it came out underexposed (a wall of albedo 0.8 is log2(0.8 / 0.18) ≈ 2.15 stops under). This adds incident metering: the meter divides the scene luminance by the G-buffer's albedo to estimate the light falling on surfaces, so white stays white and a grey card stays grey.
What changes
luminanceF.glsl divides each patch's mean non-sky luminance by its mean albedo to the power of the strength. The key follows the strength, so a scene whose surfaces average middle grey meters the same at any strength. The divisor is floored at 0.1, and a patch's albedo earns its share of the exposure (the grid's alpha, smoothstep(0.02, 0.12, albedo)), so near-black surfaces carry little weight (exposureHistogramV.glsl).
New setting AlchemyExposureIncidentStrength (0 to 1, default 1), with an "Incident metering" slider in the Lightbox's advanced auto exposure, saved with Looks. 0 restores the previous reflective behaviour exactly: no albedo is bound or read and the grid's alpha stays 1.
Debug setting AlchemyExposureIncidentTuning (Vector3: albedo floor, trust ramp start and end) for tuning, passed with the strength as the vec4 uniform meter_albedo_params.
Blended surfaces aren't in the G-buffer, so the albedo under them is the opaque surface behind. The forward alpha pass marks a new stencil bit (alblendstencil.h, the bit after the water's two), generateLuminance copies it into a transient R8 mask (meterBlendMap), and marked taps count as albedo 0.18, the key, so they meter as reflective metering does. Main view only, and only above strength 0.
New reserved uniforms: meterAlbedoMap, meterBlendMap, meter_albedo_params.
Not specially handled
These are still metered. Nothing special was added for them, so each reads as follows:
Emissive surfaces are metered as the lights they are, at their on-screen luminance, and may go hot.
Water over the world is metered as it always was, with its luminance divided by the seabed's albedo: the water writes depth but never the G-buffer, and its map only marks water over nothing (which is metered as sky). That's a fair stand-in in clear water and less so in deep or murky water.
Metals (glTF PBR materials with a metallic value, whose base colour tints their reflection and not their diffuse light) are metered as the radiance they reflect, as they are by reflective metering.
Behaviour change
The default metering becomes incident (strength 1). Looks saved before this change don't include the strength, and compensation tuned against reflective metering will look different. Setting the strength to 0 gives the old behaviour.
Testing
check_exposure.py passes, including new section (g): a white wall and a grey card in the same light meter alike, a near-black surface has no say, a blended pixel meters as reflective does, and the key follows the strength.
luminance_gl_test: four new cases (division by albedo across strengths, the floor and ramp, blended pixels through the real stencil states and mask, and the mask being exactly where blended surfaces were drawn without touching the water's bit). ctest -R '^newview_gl_tests/luminance_gl_test$' passes (462 assertions in 6 cases) on Linux, AMD RX 6900 XT (radeonsi), RelWithDebInfo. The checks that read the albedo allow 0.5% because the GPU's sRGB decode was up to ~0.2% off the exact curve.
In viewer: the studio scene that prompted this (a large lit white wall under dim lamps) meters correctly at the default, and a blended-material case that was thrown off at strength 1 is fixed by the mask.
Notes for reviewers
The incident light is an estimate from the G-buffer's albedo. The floor (0.1), the trust ramp (0.02–0.12) and the 0.18 reading of blended pixels come from reasoning, not measurement, which is why AlchemyExposureIncidentTuning exists. I'm happy to hardcode or remove it once the values settle.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Auto Exposure now supports incident metering, which can account for surface albedo when measuring lighting. Use the new Incident metering control to blend between reflective metering at 0 and incident metering at 1.
Blended surfaces are metered reflectively, and the viewer falls back to reflective metering when incident metering is unavailable.
The Incident metering setting is saved with Looks.
The renderer now supports configurable incident exposure metering using G-buffer albedo and a stencil-derived blended-surface mask. Ground luminance and histogram weighting use albedo-based adjustments, and exposure-key calibration follows the effective metering strength. Settings, UI controls, shader bindings, tests, and architecture documentation were updated.

Alpha rendering marks blended surfaces with stencil bit 2. The pipeline writes marked coverage to an R8 mask. The GL fixture creates and checks the stencil-derived mask.
Persisted settings control incident strength and albedo tuning. Shader bindings and luminance calculations use G-buffer albedo and the blend mask. The pipeline selects effective strength and the UI exposes the strength setting. GL tests cover metering strengths, albedo values, and blended pixels.
Histogram weighting and exposure key indra/newview/app_settings/shaders/class1/deferred/exposureHistogramV.glsl, indra/newview/pipeline.cpp, scripts/content_tools/check_exposure.py, doc/ARCHITECTURE.md
The histogram applies the ground-earned value to non-sky samples. Exposure-key calibration uses the effective metering strength. The checker covers albedo adjustments, earned weighting, blended pixels, and key calibration.

Add a depth-enabled case for blended fragments that fail the depth test.
markBlended disables depth testing, so every fragment it draws passes the depth test. The depth-fail operation in ALBlendStencil::Mark never runs in these tests. A change that writes BLENDED_BIT on depth-failed pixels would not fail any current assertion.
The production LLDrawPoolAlpha::forwardRender draws blended surfaces with depth testing enabled, so occluded blended fragments reach the depth-fail path there.
Add a test case that draws a blended fragment over opaque geometry with depth testing enabled. Assert that the occluded pixels stay unmarked and that the visible pixels are marked. Use a depth-enabled variant of the helper for this case, and leave the existing cases unchanged.
The markBlended comment also says the helper reproduces what forwardRender leaves in the stencil. The helper's depth state does not match that draw, so correct the comment to describe the depth-disabled isolation.

Update the blended-fragment tests around `ALBlendStencil::Mark` to add a
depth-enabled variant of `markBlended` that draws over opaque geometry and
asserts occluded pixels remain unmarked while visible pixels are marked. Leave
the existing depth-disabled cases unchanged, and revise the `markBlended`
comment to describe its depth-disabled isolation rather than claiming it
reproduces `forwardRender` stencil state.

meter() in indra/newview/tests/luminance_gl_test.cpp binds METER_ALBEDO_MAP and METER_BLEND_MAP itself. It sets the unit, sampler flags, and the strength > 0.f gating in the test. No test calls LLPipeline::generateLuminance, so the production bindings in indra/newview/pipeline.cpp are not exercised. An omitted, misbound, or incorrectly gated albedo or blend texture in production can leave the incident-metering assertions passing while the viewer meters with the wrong albedo or mask.
Add a test that drives generateLuminance. Alternatively, move the albedo and blend binding code into a helper that both the test and generateLuminance call.

The luminance test binds albedo and blend textures itself, so it does not verify
the production bindings in generateLuminance. Add a test that exercises
generateLuminance and checks its albedo and blend bindings, or extract those
bindings into a helper called by both generateLuminance and the test; preserve
the production texture units, sampler flags, and strength gating.
Add a blended-over-sky case to the blended-pixel tests.
Add a blended-over-sky case to the blended-pixel tests.
The GL test blended pixels read as the key whatever lies behind them marks blended surfaces only over world patches. Its result loop checks only the world half of the grid (gx < GRID_W / 2). The Python blended check sets the sky share to 0.0 for every cell, so it cannot represent a blended pixel over sky. The mask-only test reads back mask bits and does not check how the shader classifies them.
Add a case that marks blended surfaces over sky patches. The test should expect the key reading that the shader header describes. Until the sky classification of blended pixels is settled, this case reflects that contract and will expose the current classification of blended-over-sky pixels.

347:
Extend the blended-pixel tests around `patch_by_albedo` and `meter` with a case
that marks blended surfaces over sky patches and asserts the key reading
specified by the shader header. Ensure the GL result check evaluates sky-side
cells as well as world-side cells so the new case verifies sky classification.
The exposure meter averaged the light each surface reflects and exposed
that to middle grey, so it could not tell a white wall in dim light from
a grey one in bright light: a wall of albedo 0.8 came out log2(0.8 /
0.18) = 2.15 stops under, and the subject in front of it with it. A
compensation of +2 put one such scene right.
luminanceF.glsl now divides each patch's mean non-sky luminance by the
patch's mean albedo (the G-buffer's first attachment, decoded from sRGB)
to the power of the strength, which estimates the light that falls on
the patch: white stays white and a grey card stays grey. The key moves
with the strength, (1 - s) * log2(0.18) in stops, so a scene whose
surfaces average middle grey meters the same at any strength and at 1
the key is 1. AlchemyExposureIncidentStrength sets it (0 to 1, default
1; a slider in the Lightbox's advanced auto exposure, saved with a
Look). At 0 the pass binds and reads no albedo and the grid is what it
was.
The divisor is floored at 0.1, and the grid's alpha, which was 1, now
carries the share of the patch's exposure its albedo has earned,
smoothstep(0.02, 0.12, albedo) at strength 1, so that a near black
surface says nothing about the light on it; exposureHistogramV.glsl
weights a non-sky point by it. The floor and the ramp are
AlchemyExposureIncidentTuning (a Vector3 debug setting), passed with the
strength as the vec4 meter_albedo_params and clamped in
generateLuminance so that no value divides by zero or inverts the ramp.
meterAlbedoMap, meterBlendMap and meter_albedo_params are new reserved
uniforms.
Blended surfaces draw after the lighting and are not in the G-buffer, so
the albedo under one is the opaque surface behind it. The forward alpha
pass (LLDrawPoolAlpha::forwardRender, not its depth-only pass for depth
of field) now marks ALBlendStencil::BLENDED_BIT, the bit after the
water's two, wherever its fragments pass. generateLuminance copies it
under ALBlendStencil::OnBlended into a transient R8 target sharing the
G-buffer's depth and stencil, in the main view and only above strength
0, and the meter reads it as meterBlendMap. A marked tap counts as
albedo 0.18, the key, which meters it as reflective metering does,
whatever lies behind it.
Not specially handled, on purpose, and still metered: an emissive
surface is metered as the light it is and may go hot; water over the
world is metered with the seabed's albedo, since the water writes the
depth and never the G-buffer and its map marks only water over nothing;
a metal (a glTF PBR material with a metallic value, whose base colour
tints its reflection and not its diffuse light) reads as the radiance it
reflects, as it does on reflective metering.
check_exposure.py mirrors the key and the grid's division, and checks
that a white wall and a grey card in one light meter alike, that a near
black surface has no say, that a blended pixel meters as reflective
metering does, and that the key follows the strength. luminance_gl_test
(newview_gl_tests) meters a G-buffer through the viewer's program at
strengths 0, 0.5 and 1, the floor and the ramp across albedos, and
blended pixels marked with the real stencil states and read through the
mask, and checks that the mask is exactly where blended surfaces were
drawn and leaves the water's bit alone. The checks that read the albedo
allow half a percent: the GPU's sRGB decode came out up to 0.2% off the
exact curve.

Review of the incident metering change found two gaps, both in what the
meter does where the blended mask is not there.
generateLuminance made the mask in the main view alone, but
AlchemyExposureIncidentStrength applied to every pack, so the glTF
material preview, which meters through the auxiliary pack, divided by
albedo with no mask: a blended material was read against an albedo it is
not in. The strength is now the main view's (renderPack() ==
Pack::Main), and any other pack meters reflectively, as it did before.
generateExposure takes the key of the grid's values from the strength
generateLuminance actually metered at (mMeterIncident), not from the
setting, so a grid and its key cannot disagree.
Where the main view could not make the mask, the shader was left an
unbound unit. ALTextureSlot::unbind binds the white placeholder when the
slot last held a texture, and does nothing when it never did, so the
unit could read as every pixel blended or as whatever was last on it.
The meter now meters reflectively for that call, at strength 0, so the
shader reads neither the albedo nor the mask, and the branch that
unbound the unit is gone. A mask that exists is bound as before.
luminance_gl_test's meter() binds the mask whenever the strength is
above 0, as generateLuminance does, so the blended case no longer runs
without one (the pipeline never produces that state), and the cases that
mark nothing draw the empty mask first. doc/ARCHITECTURE.md says that
incident metering is the main view's, and where it falls back.
Not changed: a blended pixel classified as sky (far depth, or water over
nothing) is still metered as sky. That branch never divides by albedo,
so the mask has nothing to correct there, and reclassifying it as ground
would move its weight from the sky weight to full.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
LLPipeline::generateLuminance sets meter_strength to 0 and mMeterIncident to 0 when the blend mask is missing (pipeline.cpp:8502-8506). The meter() helper in luminance_gl_test.cpp:302-309 binds the mask at every positive strength. No test reaches the production branch that handles a missing mask.
Test the production decision, not a fixture that re-creates it. Unbinding the fixture texture only bypasses that decision. A useful test runs the production path with the mask unavailable at positive strength, then checks that the effective strength and the stored mMeterIncident are both zero. The setup for forcing that state depends on the test fixture and the transient-target acquire conditions, which are not confirmed yet.

Add a blended-over-sky case to the blended-key test.
This test name says blended pixels read as the key "whatever lies behind them." The test marks blended pixels only over the world half and asserts only gx < GRID_W / 2. Blended pixels over sky are not asserted.
Add a case that marks blended pixels over sky patches. Assert that those taps are metered as key-albedo ground, as the shader header describes: their luminance is divided by NOMINAL_ALBEDO, and they do not count as sky. The current shader tests far depth before it reads meterBlendMap, so this case fails until that order changes.

Description
Auto-exposure metered the light each surface reflects and exposed it to middle grey, so a white wall in dim light came out grey and everything in front of it came out underexposed (a wall of albedo 0.8 is log2(0.8 / 0.18) ≈ 2.15 stops under). This adds incident metering: the meter divides the scene luminance by the G-buffer's albedo to estimate the light falling on surfaces, so white stays white and a grey card stays grey.
What changes
luminanceF.glsldivides each patch's mean non-sky luminance by its mean albedo to the power of the strength.
