Challenge 004 Submissions

Not an actual issue, but a stub for potentially using issue-comments as a way to submit a Tim Jam. Presently submission is a work-in-progress and subject to changes.

Made in a brand new custom engine using Swift compiled to WASM, using JavaScriptKit to interact with the web page / browser. The main design goal of the engine is to be a lightweight platform to easily make simple games and graphical applications for the web, while being able to use a sane programming language and abstracting away the annoyances of html, css and javascript. Currently 2D only but 3D support could be added.

Development time: 4 hours on Sunday for the first fully playable version and a couple more hours adding a little polish and fixing issues over the week. Not including engine development time which is maybe 20 hours so far.

The way rendering currently works is that each drawn object is a separate HTML element, positioned using CSS transforms (yes, each particle is its own HTML element). Performance may vary across browsers, but Chrome-based browsers seem to work without issues, while Safari seems to struggle. Also because I don't really care about art in this project for now, everything is rendered using text elements and ASCII (it's also cool in its own way).

Current plan for next stage:

• Add resource collection and upgrades
• More polish such as background graphics

• Created basic asteroids that split into two parts until smallest.
• Created a player ship that can fire projectiles.
• Projectiles hitting an asteroid and splitting it apart.
• Detected player hit asteroid, but no win/lose conditions.

Tasks completed:

• Added purely visual asteroids to the background.
• Implemented actual asteroid splitting.
• Asteroids drop resources and they can be collected.
• There's a station to buy upgrades.
• Player data saving and loading (can be cleared in the main menu).

Exceeded 4-6 hours development time by quite a bit, but work was unfocused and scattered throughout the week.
