So I set this up followed the instructions. I used it, saw 80% reduction, but it immediately drained my available usage, and the budget in one prompt before the agent could even do anything

Did you enable pxpipe mid-session on a long conversation?

Your entire existing history was cached as text at the 0.1× read rate, the first imaged request breaks that match, so you re-pay your whole session (potentially hundreds of k tokens) as a fresh 1.25× cache write in one prompt

Not quite, but I did already have a large repo maybe that had something to do with it
