๐ฎ Preserving Gaming History Through Open Source Tools
Hi! I'm building GaiaLabs - a collection of reverse engineering tools that make retro game preservation and modding accessible to everyone. My mission is to ensure classic games remain playable, moddable, and understood for future generations.
๐ ๏ธ What I'm Building
I've already released IOGRetranslation, a complete retranslation mod for Illusion of Gaia that demonstrates the potential of these tools. Building on this proof-of-concept, GaiaLabs provides open source tools for:
- Code archiving: Extracting and documenting game logic from retro titles
- Mod creation: Making it easier for creators to modify classic games (like IOGRetranslation)
- Format documentation: Reverse engineering undocumented formats for preservation
- Community tools: npm packages that developers can use in their own preservation projects
All tools follow clean room methodologies and never send game data to external servers, ensuring both legal compliance and respect for original creators.
๐ฏ Why This Matters
Every year, more games become unplayable as hardware fails and companies disappear. The gaming industry loses part of its history when we can't study how classic games were built. GaiaLabs helps:
- Preserve technical knowledge before it's lost
- Enable academic study of game development history
- Empower modding communities to keep classic games alive
- Document formats and techniques for future developers
๐ How Sponsorship Helps
Your support enables me to:
- Dedicate consistent time to tool development and maintenance
- Keep all tools open source and freely available
- Cover infrastructure costs for documentation and community resources
- Research and reverse engineer more abandoned formats
- Respond quickly to community feature requests and bug reports
Every sponsor, regardless of tier, gets:
- ๐ข Priority issue responses
- ๐ฏ Input on project roadmap and feature prioritization
- ๐ฐ Monthly development updates
- ๐ฌ Access to sponsor-only discussions
๐ Current Focus
Building from the success of IOGRetranslation, I'm working on:
- Generalizing the translation tools for other SNES titles
- Expanding format support for classic console games
- Improving documentation and tutorials
- Building a comprehensive test suite
- Creating beginner-friendly CLI tools
๐ Join the Preservation Movement
Whether you're a developer using these tools, a modder creating new content, or someone who believes gaming history matters - your sponsorship makes sustainable open source development possible.
Check out IOGRetranslation in my featured work to see these preservation principles in action!
Together, we can ensure that the games we love today remain accessible and understood tomorrow.
All development happens in the open. Check out my pinned repositories to see what I'm working on!
Help me keep developing GaiaLabs while caring for Charlie, my diabetic pup and coding companion! Charlie needs insulin twice daily and special diabetic food to stay healthy. Reaching this goal means I can cover his medical costs ($500/month) and worry less about finances, dedicating more focused time to building preservation tools. Every sponsor helps us get closer to sustainable open source development - where I can code knowing my best friend is taken care of. Charlie says woof (that means thank you)! ๐พ
