Maybe we should backport these to 4.3.2?

It seems that this #9323 fix made by @tjzel didn't resolve all the issues as @blazejkustra was able to reproduce crashes in 4.3.1 where it was included. Not sure if my changes fixed the problem but I haven't seen any issue reports related to this bug on 4.4.0 yet.

Also someone upgraded to 4.4.0 here boardsesh/boardsesh#2318 to fix crashes so it seems that 4.4.0 doesn't have this issue anymore.
