Awesome tool.

Once I got rustup installed correctly...

Had to apt-get install pkg-config libssl-dev to get cargo to build.

System details:

One thing that I'd probably avoid is installing software without asking for permission first.

You raised an excellent point about automatic installation of system utilities, and the openssl dependencies. We've addressed this concern with several improvements:

Recommended: Nix Build (Zero Dependencies to Install)
The ideal solution is using Nix, which handles all dependencies automatically without touching your system:

  nix build && \
  sudo ./result/bin/hardware_report

This completely avoids the dependency installation issues you encountered since Nix bundles everything in an isolated environment.

Alternative: Pre-built Release Options
We also now provide pre-built binaries and Debian packages:

• Pre-built Linux binaries: Available as .tar.gz files from our https://github.com/sfcompute/hardware_report/releases
• Debian packages: .deb files with proper dependency declarations (no automatic installation)

Improved Dependency Handling
The Debian package approach respects user choice:

No More Automatic Installations

• Nix builds require zero system dependency installation
• Pre-built binaries require manual dependency installation
• Debian packages use proper package management (with user consent)
• Build-from-source is now documented as an advanced option

Updated Documentation
The README now prioritizes these installation methods and clearly explains what dependencies are needed and why :)

My personal preference would be the debian installer, but I'd want it from a repo instead of just a download/.deb install so that future apt-get update work seamlessly.
