RAW images are uncropped

I have just noticed that RAW images (in my case Sony ARW) are not cropped and have artefacts on the right hand edge. How noticeable this is depends on the subject, focus, etc.

When viewed in FlyPhotos the full image is 6272x4168. When loaded into Lightroom the image is corrected based on the camera and lens profile and is displayed as 6192x4128. I suspect it is too complex to perform the same level of corrective processing as Lightroom, but is it possible the determine the correct dimensions and perform a basic crop which would remove the artefacts?

1. I no longer have it installed. I disliked it so much and how it would steal back file associations, that I removed it some time ago. But if I open in PaintShop Pro I see the full image with the artefacts. If I open in Photoshop I do not - presumably Adobe Camera RAW is doing the correction.
2. Unfortunately the standard file properties show 6272x4168. The EXIF metadata also states Image width 6272 and Image height 4168. However, the EXIF metadata has additional entries of Pixel width 6192 and Pixel height 4128.

I suspect an added complexity will be that the required crop will vary depending on camera and orientation.

It may just be too much effort to find a solution that works for all RAW images as they will vary depending on the camera used. In which case I completely understand.

I can replicate the issue using the dpreview sample.
Microsoft Photos also has the same issue.

Fly uses Windows Imaging Component as the first choice for decoding RAW files
and if that fails (rare) I use ImageMagick

If I use ImageMagick for decoding RAW (by commenting out WIC), then RAW is displayed properly. But the speed of ImageMagick is less compared to WIC. (in my 10 year old PC, WIC decodes that RAW in 1500 milliseconds, while ImageMagick takes 2500+ ms)

Yes that does indeed fix the issue for me, but does come at the cost of a slightly slower decode (even with a high-spec PC). It is not an issue when slowly stepping through images as the cache does it's job. However, if I quickly skip through the images I can feel the slower decode. Personally, I don't mind the slower decode for the corrected image. Perhaps it could be an user selectable option for RAW files only?

One slight bug, I have Zoom in on file Open enabled and it would seem this is still using the WIC method. It took me a while to work out why I was still seeing the issue on the first image opened.

Edit: Just discovered a second bug. ImageMagick does not display the correct orientation, so portrait images are shown rotated. WIC does orient these correctly. If I manually rotate the image and remember this, the position gets messed up when I view the image again. It positions the image based on the remembered pan and then applies the rotation, which changes the position. This does not happen with WIC.

Interestingly, ImageMagick crops to 6240x4168, which somewhere between the RAW (6272x4168) and Lightroom (6192x4128). It is still enough to remove the artefacts, I wonder how that is being determined. It would be ideal if WIC could be made to do the same.

In Settings>General>PhotoDisplay>DecodeRaw, a decoder priority control has been added.
There are three decoders for RAW and you can choose priority.
All (atleast most) of the orientation issues are fixed.

You can try all three and see different behaviours with RAW.
(It is not live, after changing, you may need to navigate away few photos and come back to releod HQ photo)
Since RAW is not pixel perfect data, what we see are different interpretations of each decoders with their default settings.

Rawler can decode

ImageMagick can decode

I think that is a very nice solution - it gives people the choice about speed/quality and maximises compatibility. In my testing with Sony RAW I found:

Off (default) - Smaller preview JPG is shown
Rawler - Fast and correctly cropped but not correctly colour corrected, often gives a washed-out image
ImageMagick - Slower but best results for colour and lens correction, image correctly cropped
WIC - Good colour correction but image is uncropped, artefacts visible at edge
