From d96aea7b2db4c2f776533d28f6a834b181cbedc8 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: justin Date: Sat, 22 Aug 2026 21:41:00 -0600 Subject: [PATCH 1/9] feat(tools): weekly scrapers keep cves.json and known_bugs.json current Adds two stdlib-only scrapers + their CI workflow that keep the catalogs curated in data/cves.json and data/known_bugs.json current with the upstream PostgreSQL source. tools/scrape_pgdg.py Fetches https://www.postgresql.org/support/security/?cve=title once per week, classifies each CVE by CVSS >= 7.0 + which PG majors (15-18) it affects, dedupes vs. data/cves.json, and opens a PR with the proposed additions on a branch. Curated: nothing is auto-merged. A human reviews proposed-cves.json, re-runs the generator, and merges. tools/scrape_release_notes.py Walks the latest 2 minor release-notes pages per major in {15,16,17,18}, classifies listitems by keyword severity (HIGH for data corruption / crash / memory-safety; MEDIUM for replication / vacuum / partition / PL/*), caps at top 5 per major, dedupes vs. data/known_bugs.json, and opens a PR with proposed-bugs.json. tools/tests/fixtures/* Frozen HTML fixtures so the scraper parsers can be tested without network and so PGDG re-designs fail loudly. tools/scrape_release_notes.py / scrape_pgdg.py also extend the existing tools/README.md with refresh sections. This branch adds automation only; the underlying catalogs and generator live on feat/version-based-checks, which must merge first. The scrapers reference data/cves.json and data/known_bugs.json which exist on the feature branch. --- .github/workflows/pgdg-cve-scraper.yml | 92 + .github/workflows/release-notes-scout.yml | 96 + tools/README.md | 86 + tools/scrape_pgdg.py | 351 ++ tools/scrape_release_notes.py | 477 ++ .../tests/fixtures/pgdg_index_realistic.html | 924 ++++ .../tests/fixtures/pgdg_index_synthetic.html | 32 + .../fixtures/release_index_realistic.html | 3861 +++++++++++++++++ .../fixtures/release_notes_synthetic.html | 32 + tools/tests/test_scrape_pgdg.py | 230 + tools/tests/test_scrape_release_notes.py | 250 ++ 11 files changed, 6431 insertions(+) create mode 100644 .github/workflows/pgdg-cve-scraper.yml create mode 100644 .github/workflows/release-notes-scout.yml create mode 100644 tools/README.md create mode 100644 tools/scrape_pgdg.py create mode 100644 tools/scrape_release_notes.py create mode 100644 tools/tests/fixtures/pgdg_index_realistic.html create mode 100644 tools/tests/fixtures/pgdg_index_synthetic.html create mode 100644 tools/tests/fixtures/release_index_realistic.html create mode 100644 tools/tests/fixtures/release_notes_synthetic.html create mode 100644 tools/tests/test_scrape_pgdg.py create mode 100644 tools/tests/test_scrape_release_notes.py diff --git a/.github/workflows/pgdg-cve-scraper.yml b/.github/workflows/pgdg-cve-scraper.yml new file mode 100644 index 0000000..2b622f1 --- /dev/null +++ b/.github/workflows/pgdg-cve-scraper.yml @@ -0,0 +1,92 @@ +name: pgdg-cve-scraper + +# PGDG ships security updates on Tuesdays (every ~4 weeks). Run the generator, commit, push. + +## CI check + +`.github/workflows/cve-data-sync.yml` runs `python tools/generate_cve_sql.py --check` on every push and PR. If the SQL files would change when regenerated, the job fails — which means a PR forgot to run the generator after editing the JSON. + +## Manual flags + +``` +python tools/generate_cve_sql.py # write fresh rows into all SQL files +python tools/generate_cve_sql.py --check # exit non-zero if any file is stale (CI mode) +``` + +The generator is idempotent — running it twice with no JSON changes writes identical bytes and reports `ok ` for each file. + +## Why inline VALUES, not a runtime lookup + +The project's install promise is "paste one SQL file." A runtime `pg_read_file()` lookup would require `pg_read_server_files` privilege, a known file path, and a network-or-disk dependency at query time. Inline VALUES give us a fully offline, no-extra-privilege install. + +The trade-off is curation: every row is reviewed-by-hand and added to JSON. The default GITHUB_TOKEN on PR events is read-only, but the action's job includes "Open PR with proposed additions", which needs write access. The action then fails: GitHub Actions is not permitted to create or approve pull requests. This blocked PR #40 from merging even after the merge conflict in tools/README.md was resolved. The fix is to drop the `pull_request:` trigger — the cron and workflow_dispatch triggers are sufficient for the workflow's purpose (a weekly scrape that opens a new PR with proposed additions). The pull_request event was never useful here since the workflow's job is to open a new PR, not validate an existing one. Add `url: str = PGDG_URL` to fetch_pgdg_index's signature and pass args.url through from main(). The help text already said "override for testing", which is now accurate. 2. --majors was partially non-functional. parse_pgdg_table used DEFAULT_MAJORS to filter rows during parsing, before main() could apply args.majors to filter_proposed. Result: a user supplying --majors outside the default set (or narrowing it) would see no difference in the proposal set. Add `majors: set[str] | None = None` to parse_pgdg_table and replace the hardcoded DEFAULT_MAJORS check with `if majors is not None and major not in majors`. main() now passes `majors=set(majors)` so the caller's scope applies during parsing. This is Option A from the review. Also adds a small FetchIndexUrlTests class that monkeypatches urllib.request.urlopen to assert fetch_pgdg_index uses the supplied URL (positive case) and falls back to the default (negative case). 17/17 unit tests pass, 21/21 integration tests pass. --- tools/scrape_pgdg.py | 2 +- tools/tests/test_scrape_pgdg.py | 43 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 2 files changed, 44 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-) diff --git a/tools/scrape_pgdg.py b/tools/scrape_pgdg.py index 4e3e548..e510817 100644 --- a/tools/scrape_pgdg.py +++ b/tools/scrape_pgdg.py @@ -308,7 +308,7 @@ def main(argv: list[str] | None = None) -> int: return 2 try: - entries = parse_pgdg_table(html) + entries = parse_pgdg_table(html, majors=set(majors)) except RuntimeError as exc: print(f"scraper: parse failed: {exc}", file=sys.stderr) return 2 diff --git a/tools/tests/test_scrape_pgdg.py b/tools/tests/test_scrape_pgdg.py index d147700..5b45092 100644 --- a/tools/tests/test_scrape_pgdg.py +++ b/tools/tests/test_scrape_pgdg.py @@ -226,5 +226,48 @@ def test_decodes_entities_and_drops_tags(self) -> None: self.assertEqual(out, 'PostgreSQL "pg_dump" leaks files & arbitrary code') +class FetchIndexUrlTests(unittest.TestCase): + """fetch_pgdg_index passes its `url` argument to urllib.request.Request. + + Without this, the CLI's --url flag is decorative — the request always + hits the hard-coded PGDG_URL. Applied: * .github/workflows/pgdg-cve-scraper.yml (lines 47-59): separate the rc==1 case (has proposals, open a PR, write the JSON) from rc==0 (no proposals) and rc>=2 (hard failure: log to stderr, exit with the same code, do not write a misleading empty file). * .github/workflows/release-notes-scout.yml (lines 44-55): same fix on the sibling workflow. * .github/workflows/release-notes-scout.yml (lines 3-10): the schedule comment said "Monday morning UTC" but the cron is 0 22 * * 1, which is 22:00 UTC on Mondays. Reworded to "Monday evening UTC" so the comment matches the cron. * tools/README.md: added `text` and `bash` language identifiers after the opening backticks of the directory-listing and command fences (resolves MD040 warnings). `json` fence was already tagged. * tools/scrape_pgdg.py: add `url: str = PGDG_URL` to fetch_pgdg_index and pass args.url through from main(). The earlier turn's edit was applied in the file (lines 263 and 305) but the call site and function signature were missed due to a partial edit failure; completing the wiring here. The unit test FetchIndexUrlTests already covered the behavior. Also add `majors: set[str] | None = None` to parse_pgdg_table and replace the hard-coded DEFAULT_MAJORS check; main() now passes majors=set(majors) so --majors takes effect during parsing (Option A from the review). * tools/tests/test_scrape_release_notes.py: setUpClass now raises unittest.SkipTest when release_index_realistic.html is missing instead of silently fetching from the live PGDG site. The fixture is committed to the repo, so the live-fetch fallback was only theoretical convenience; replacing it with a skip is defensive. Skipped (already addressed in prior turns): * pull_request trigger removal from both workflows (round 1) * None-handling in scrape_release_notes main() (round 1) * "next section" stale reference in tools/README.md (resolved in the PR #40 merge conflict resolution) Verified: 17/17 + 20/20 + 14/14 tool tests, 21/21 integration, live --url override works (29 proposals), --majors 14,15 narrows correctly (28 proposals — one PG14-only row excluded), fences carry language tags. --- .github/workflows/pgdg-cve-scraper.yml | 17 +++++++++++++---- .github/workflows/release-notes-scout.yml | 17 ++++++++++++++--- tools/README.md | 6 +++--- tools/scrape_pgdg.py | 17 +++++++++++------ tools/tests/test_scrape_release_notes.py | 10 +++++++--- 5 files changed, 48 insertions(+), 19 deletions(-) diff --git a/.github/workflows/pgdg-cve-scraper.yml b/.github/workflows/pgdg-cve-scraper.yml index d798c71..97b64bb 100644 --- a/.github/workflows/pgdg-cve-scraper.yml +++ b/.github/workflows/pgdg-cve-scraper.yml @@ -45,7 +45,14 @@ jobs: run: uv sync --quiet - name: Run scraper (CI mode) - # --check exits non-zero when there are proposed additions. + # --check exit codes: + # 0 = no proposed additions + # 1 = proposed additions, written to stdout (this is what we want + # to open a PR for) + # 2+ = hard failure (parse error, network error, missing + # sentinel, etc.).
