standardize SMD payload pinout? #1

Description

@maholli

Payloads 1 - 4 on mainboard v01 and v02 are designed with a SPI/I2C/UART interface that accommodates my ADC breakout boards found here which have been used for a multitude of sensing/testing projects. However, the pinout is less than ideal and could be greatly improved.

Community input needed... 💬

to narrow-in on size and pinout needs for payloads that fit this single-sided SMD criteria.

Features I think would be helpful:

  • SPI, I2C, and UART communication. Current implementation requires choosing ONE of the prior communication protocols. Is there need to have parallel protocol access to a single payload?
  • The SMD footprint should accommodate either a mezzanine board for payloads that are directly soldered to the mainboard as well as an SMD connector to allow for connecting the payload via a wiring harness.

Questions for the community (feel free to respond to this issue with your specific needs!):

  • power requirements?
  • communication requirements?
  • how many general purpose input/output (GPIO) do you need?
  • what is a reasonable amount of surface area needed to accommodate your payload?
  • do you need direct access to other hardware in the cubesat?
