Blank Tabs

Hello,

I find your extension very useful, nice job, thanks. However there is one thing about it I don't like- in settings I user Sort by: URL option and the extension sorts blank tabs alphabetically in contrast with Tab Sorter and Organize Tabs which keep them in the beginning of the tab bar. You may add a new check box in settings:

• Keep blank tabs first

or something like that. My user case- I prefer to keep first open tab blank in order to have a quick access to my speed dial (nightTab).

Hi @smaragdus, thanks for the feedback. I don't have immediate plans with respect to what will be in, and when will be, the next release. That said, I've become a bit concerned that continuing to add additional features conflicts with the expectation of the "Simple" in "Simple Tab Sorter". If I add this in a future release, I'll probably implement Ignore blank tabs to keep things simple. Otherwise, I'd have to offer keep first/last options, and more options are just a turn-off for some users (it also complicates the code more than I'd like).

I just tested this in Brave, on windows, and the blank tab I added is relocated to the beginning of the non-pinned tabs at the beginning (left-side) of the tab bar. This sounds consistent with the behavior you're requesting, which has me wondering, which browser/version/OS are you using? Speaking of pinned tabs, have you tried pinning your blank tab and selecting Sort pinned tabs in the STS options page? It sounds like that might achieve what you want without having to wait for a future release.

Thanks for the detailed response. If you think that what I suggested is too much of an effort for achieving a very tiny improvement which might even be considered as a unnecessary complication of the code, please feel free to close this issue.

I am using Cent Browser and Vivaldi but I have tested your extension only with the former.

If I add this in a future release, I'll probably implement Ignore blank tabs to keep things simple.

One question here- wouldn't be better to ignore not just blank tabs but all system tabs?

I was testing several extensions with similar functionality and I opened this issue because I thought it strange that blank tabs were sorted in alphabetical order (New Tab).

For the time being I am using these two extensions- OhMyTab (Chrome Web Store, GitHub) and Organize Tabs (Chrome Web Store, GitHub) for different operations, the firmer has a useful for me feature- Close tabs in the same domain.

Hi @smaragdus, sorry for the delayed reply...

Ignoring all blank & system tabs would probably make the most sense, from a user standpoint, but ignoring the extensions will probably (TBH, I haven't looked at the code in a while) add a bit of complexity and an additional check, per tab, to ensure that the tab being ignored isn't the tab suspender extension. BTW, did you try Sort pinned tabs as I suggested or does that not work for your workflow?

If you don't mind, I'd like to leave this issue open as a reminder of what to consider when I need to make another update.
