Does this work also on a Bluetooth keyboard or is coded to work only on device hardware?

It does. However the alt mappings are not yet ported to your typical ansi / iso layouts
An in app alt key mapping editor with import / export functionality is planned however so that you can do this without the need for an app update to have a new layout
