Can you name some programming languages that aren't worth learning from a career perspective?

No major language is entirely useless, specific languages should be heavily avoided under certain circumstances due to steep learning curves, shifting industry standards, or cybersecurity risks.

I wouldn’t really say there are languages you should completely avoid in 2026, but from a career perspective I’d be careful about spending too much time on very niche or outdated languages unless you already know you’ll need them for a specific job. To open doors Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, C#, C++, or Go. Even older languages like COBOL can still be valuable in certain industries, so it really depends on your goals. In general, it’s better to pick the field you want to work in first and then learn the languages that are actually used there.

I don't think there are really any "bad" programming languages. There are just languages that are a poor fit for a particular problem or career path.
The only thing I'd recommend from a learning perspective is not starting out with an interpreted language. I think you'll build a much stronger foundation by learning a statically and strongly typed language first. It forces you to understand a lot more of the fundamentals instead of letting the language hide them from you.
I actually made that mistake myself - I started my career with PHP about 15 years ago. PHP is a great language, especially with how much it has evolved since then, but looking back, I think I would have benefited a lot more from starting with something like C++, Java.
