I built Custom Shell System to let you change your appearance without changing your shell's abilities. Pick an outfit, choose a variant, adjust its colors and save the looks you want to keep.
CSS is the wardrobe system. Install UE4SS and CSS outfit packages separately. The outfits in the screenshots are not included in this download.
What you can do

Browse your installed outfits in a scrolling list, with mouse and controller support.

Switch outfit variants, use preset palettes or adjust individual parts with RGB sliders.

Mark favorites and save named appearance templates.

Rotate, zoom and frame the character in the game's own Inventory preview.

Restore your original appearance or reset an outfit's colors.
Available variants and color controls depend on the outfit package. CSS saves your choices separately from the game save. You do not need to unlock all shells, weapons or seals.
Install

Close the game.

Install UE4SS for MS2 by Framecore. CSS uses UE4SS v3.0.1-1028-gd7e7826d, included in the verified main-file bundle version 1.1.

Extract the CustomShellSystem folder from the CSS ZIP into MortalShell2/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods/.

Install your chosen CSS outfit packages into MortalShell2/Content/Paks/~mods/, following each outfit's instructions.

Enter the game world, open Inventory (default I) and select CSS. Choose an outfit, then Wear.
Check that the loader is at ue4ss/Mods/CustomShellSystem/dlls/main.dll, without an extra nested folder. Keep each outfit's .pak, .utoc and .ucas files together, with their _P suffixes intact. Restart the game after adding or replacing outfit packages.
Expected folders after extraction
Extract the CustomShellSystem folder into MortalShell2/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods/.
Sparta/MortalShell2/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods/
`-- CustomShellSystem/
|-- README.txt
|-- THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt
|-- assets/
| `-- inventory-logo-v1.png
|-- core.json
|-- cores/
| `-- css_core-1.0.0.dll
|-- dlls/
| `-- main.dll
|-- enabled.txt
`-- release.json
Do not put another CustomShellSystem folder inside it. State, logs and caches are generated when needed and are not included in the ZIP.
Controls
CSS now sits between Inventory and Tarstones. The old N menu is removed in 0.2.0. The page shows the controls for your current input device.
Updating and compatibility
Close the game and replace the CSS runtime files. Keep CustomShellSystem/state/ to retain favorites, saved looks and colors. The ZIP contains no personal state and only one loader and one core DLL.
Install outfits marked as CSS-compatible. Regular mesh replacements do not appear in the wardrobe automatically. Replacers that overwrite the game's base meshes or materials can affect CSS outfits that use those assets.
Existing CSS outfit ZIPs still work. Keep your Beaute, HIT2, Seductress and other CSS packages installed. Only replace the CSS runtime.
CSS now uses Inventory's character display and lighting. Animation, physics and clipping still depend on the outfit. If you find a problem, send your CSS and UE4SS versions, outfit, gameplay shell, other installed mods and steps to reproduce it. A screenshot or recording helps me track it down.
To remove CSS, close the game and delete CustomShellSystem from ue4ss/Mods/. Outfit packages are separate and can be removed from ~mods if no longer needed.
For modders: source and converter
I've made the CSS source and Python converter available on GitHub. The converter accepts cooked Mortal Shell II .pak/.utoc/.ucas files and builds a CSS package with metadata, a thumbnail and optional color recipes.
Clone the repository and use Python 3.14, retoc, repak and your local game files. From the repository folder:
python3 tools/css_convert.py "/path/to/original-mod" --name "My Outfit" --author "YourName" --id yourname.myoutfit --thumbnail "/path/to/thumbnail.png" --game "/path/to/MortalShell2" --retoc "/path/to/retoc" --repak "/path/to/repak" --output "./dist"
Use a square PNG for the thumbnail; 512 x 512 is recommended. The default output name is CSS_My_Outfit_YourName_P. Keep the same package ID when updating it.
Some mods need adjustments before they work correctly. These can include material-slot mappings, missing dependencies, skeleton compatibility and color masks. Alternate source packs can be combined with --variant-sources; author-defined colors use --colors or a recipe for each variant. The converter does not automatically create color regions or fit assets from another game to Mortal Shell II.
The package instructions, variant workflow and color notes cover the current tools. Test the result in-game before sharing it, and keep the original authors credited.
The CSS modding guide is now available, with a project utility for repeatable builds and verified outfit ZIPs. It covers the current package format, mesh variants and color recipes. CSS is still developing; I'll keep the guide updated as the framework settles.
