Is this actually something people do? B/c the most recent IRkernel module is very out of date.

yes there are indeed people who run R via notebooks. will take a look, but low priority unless there have been requests or related tickets.
there are also people who try and run R via notepad++ and a plugin.......

Yep low priority. Just wondering if we even want to keep this in our notes. But for now I'm not touching it
