From b2f0273242128d531acbab7a0d887b1a7063ecd8 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: David Dodlek Date: Tue, 6 Oct 2026 21:21:46 +0200 Subject: [PATCH] fix(claude): Claude uses mgrep once per conceptual question and Grep for exact lookups The Claude plugin's SessionStart context ("CRITICAL: You MUST use the mgrep skill for ALL searches. NEVER use built-in WebSearch or Grep tools ...") and skill description ("MANDATORY: Replaces ALL built-in search tools ...") make Claude call mgrep for every exact lookup and about four times per conceptual question. Replace both with neutral guidance: mgrep for conceptual or cross-file questions where the identifier is unknown, Grep or rg for exact strings, symbols and regexes. The context names the session directory. Watcher behaviour and the update notice are unchanged. In a 150-run benchmark (claude -p, Opus 5.5) the new text keeps mgrep on all conceptual questions with one call each, drops it from all exact lookups, keeps correctness at 50/50 and lowers total cost by 18%. --- plugins/mgrep/hooks/mgrep_watch.py | 8 ++-- plugins/mgrep/skills/mgrep/SKILL.md | 62 ++++++----------------------- test/test.bats | 31 ++++++++++++++- 3 files changed, 47 insertions(+), 54 deletions(-) diff --git a/plugins/mgrep/hooks/mgrep_watch.py b/plugins/mgrep/hooks/mgrep_watch.py index 029eb4b..0d0eb67 100644 --- a/plugins/mgrep/hooks/mgrep_watch.py +++ b/plugins/mgrep/hooks/mgrep_watch.py @@ -43,8 +43,8 @@ def read_update_notice(): return "" -def session_start_response(): - base_context = 'CRITICAL: You MUST use the mgrep skill for ALL searches.
