XMPP is a presence and messaging protocol which is standard and is also based upon XML.
XMPP is extensible. See XEP-0001: XMPP Extension Protocols https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0001.html
It is possible to share multimedia over XMPP as singular messages, but not yet in a group.
Deploying Metalink would allow to group several multimedia elements in a single message.
