Hey — noticed you're building merge gates and safety checks for AI coding agents. We're working on the same problem from a slightly different angle.

ThumbGate uses PreToolUse hooks (before execution) + Thompson Sampling for adaptive confidence + self-distillation for auto-learning from outcomes. 68 tools on Smithery.

Curious how your approach differs — merge gates vs pre-action gates. Could be complementary: your gates at merge time, ThumbGate gates at tool-call time.

Hey, appreciate the note — I agree this is a complementary angle.

The distinction I’m aiming for with agent-guardrails is that it treats the unit of safety as the shipped change, not the individual tool call.

PreToolUse gates are great for asking: “Should the agent be allowed to take this action right now?”

agent-guardrails is focused on: “Given the final diff, task intent, repo rules, and evidence provided, should this change be trusted enough to merge or ship?”

That means the system is intentionally repo-native and evidence-oriented: task contracts, allowed scope, required validation, review output, proof gaps, and go/no-go style checks. It’s designed to work even if the agent already made a bunch of choices, because the final question is whether the change is bounded, understandable, and proven.

I can see ThumbGate fitting earlier in the loop, while agent-guardrails sits at review/merge time. The two together could be stronger than either alone: prevent obviously risky actions up front, then still require final proof before merge.

Happy to compare notes. I’d be particularly interested in how ThumbGate’s Thompson Sampling updates confidence and whether the learning is tool-specific, repo-specific, or user-specific.

Thanks for the response! ThumbGate adds PreToolUse enforcement — gates that block known-bad actions before execution. Thompson Sampling adapts confidence. Self-distillation auto-generates rules from outcomes.
