Bug description
Originally, when the problem of not being able to install LMDE 7 from a live usb was first detected, I was running LMDE 3 on a Dell Optiplex 755. The objective was to replace LMDE 3 by installing LMDE 7. During the process and trials, I installed and ran LMDE 6. There seemed to be no difference in results – meaning “no LMDE 7 install.”
A live LMDE 7 boot usb was created by first obtaining lmde-7-cinnamon-64bit.iso and flashing to a usb drive using balenaEtcher.
Because an “Install Linux Mint” icon did not appear on the Desktop upon booting from the LMDE 7 boot usb, the first alternative tried was to select MENU | Administration | Install Linux Mint. This resulted in the install program running, as indicated by the flashing LED on the usb, for about two seconds - nothing else.
Secondly, the installer was launched from the terminal. Running terminated with the error:self.setup.keyboard_layout) = subprocess.getoutput("setxkbmap -query | awk '/^(model|layout)/{print $2}'").split()
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
ValueError: too many values to unpack (expected 2)
Subsequently, various trials were conducted employing various diagnostics, differing iso source sites, usb's, distros and computers. In each instance, the problem consistently occurred in the instances when the LMDE 7 boot drive usb was used on the Dell Optiplex 755. Other distros installed on the Optiplex without difficulty.
After unsuccessfurl attempts at installs from the LMDE 7 live boot usb, installing by OEM options were tried. In the first case, OEM Session was selected from the Login-Cinnamon screen. The other was by selecting OEM Install (for manufacturers) on the Welcome to LMDE 7 64-bit screen. In both instances, after completing entries for time zone … etc, the computer restarted and the cylcle repeated.
The last attempt, no positive results, to install LMDE 7 was to follow the instructions on the web page: How to Install LMDE 7 «https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4923»
Full discussion of the problem, diagnostics, attempts and other details can be found on forum web page: Can not install LMDE 7 from usb «https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewforum.php?f=246»
Steps to reproduce
Refer “Bug Description” above
Expected behavior
It was expected, based upon various and many web page instructions, booting from the live LMDE 7 usb would proceed to the Desktop and an “Install Linux Mint” icon would appear on the DeskTop.
Actual behavior
Counter to expectations, before the Desktop appeared, a Login screen, with Cinnamon options, interrupted the boot process. The boot process continued only when and if the option "Cinnamon on Wayland (Experimental) was selected. Subsequently, the process continued to the LMDE 7 Desktop. However, there was no "Install Linux Mint" icon on the Desktop.
