Neuron is currently focused on Material Hero: a text-conditioned image generator that first learns the appearance of one Sculpted Rubber Toy from one fixed camera and studio-lighting setup.
Material Hero v0 now has a verified dataset, packaged fixed-view checkpoint, and local web-inference path. The Three.js app loads the exported hero GLB, captures P, smooth N, V, and Coverage, sends them with a controlled material prompt to FastAPI, and displays the model result. The reference cam_001 view is supported; orbiting automatically requests deliberately out-of-distribution results. Multi-view data, alternate geometry support, and deployment remain later work, as does the broader neural-asset engine.
When returning to the project, read:

- The relevant runbook:
For a conceptual and implementation-oriented introduction to model training, read From words to pixels. It covers modern text-to-image approaches, core ML terminology and math, compact PyTorch examples, and a proposed first Material Hero architecture.
The public overview and local run instructions are in the repository README.
Houdini first generates one fixed view of the hero for every material and canonical text description, together with P, unbumped Nb, V, and Beauty-alpha coverage context. The first model learns prompt-conditioned RGB for that view. The Neuron application recreates the geometry buffers in Three.js and intentionally lets the user orbit, zoom, and switch supplied meshes even though those inputs are out of distribution. Later dataset versions add multiple cameras and then multiple geometries so their effect on those failures can be measured. The model does not generate shader parameters, texture maps, geometry, or editable lighting.

Use this order when documents disagree:
- Current code, generated JSON, active Houdini graph, and rendered pixels
- Accepted entries in DECISIONS.md
- Canonical files under
docs/specs/ - Current state in STATUS.md
- Historical files and chats under
docs/sources/
The historical sources explain how the project evolved, but they contain obsolete material counts, old schemas, speculative model architectures, and advice that was never adopted.

The active Houdini project is currently external to the repository. Exact paths are maintained in STATUS.md and the Houdini runbook.
- Read STATUS.md, especially Next exact actions.
- Check
git statusand do not overwrite unrelated user changes. - Confirm the active Houdini scene and HDA paths before opening or editing them.
- Confirm whether
neuron_library.jsoncontains the eight-material stress subset or the full library. - Work only on the current phase gate in ROADMAP.md.
- Before stopping, update status, changelog, and any changed specification.
- Material Hero: the first Neuron model and application milestone.
- Hero geometry: the Sculpted Rubber Toy used for the fixed-view training baseline and later hero multi-view release.
neuromat: the master JSON-driven Houdini material HDA.- Material library: deterministic JSON records combining base, finish, condition, and optional color.
- Stress set: eight representative materials used to validate all important HDA branches before scaling up.
- Dataset v0: one hero geometry and one fixed camera; the first training baseline.
- Out-of-distribution test: a camera or supplied mesh not represented in the current training release; output is experimental and may be broken.
- Canonical prompt: deterministic natural-language description stored with a material record.
- Neural asset: a future versioned, renderable model package; not part of the current implementation.
Canonical documents use the following meanings:
- Verified — inspected in the current artifact or demonstrated by a test/render
- Implemented — exists, but may still require validation
- Planned — accepted but not implemented
- Open — unresolved
- Historical — retained for context
- Superseded — replaced by a newer decision or implementation
