It is possible for time drift to occur, which can throw off timeouts. We can use [`serverTimeOffset`](https://www.firebase.com/docs/android/guide/offline-capabilities.html#section-latency), but I'm not sure how often it updates. Another option is to use SNTP ([a handy little SNTP client from Android](https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/base/+/master/core/java/android/net/SntpClient.java)).
