"In%20physics%2C%20refraction%20is%20the%20change%20in%20direction%20of%20a%20wave%20passing%20from%20one%20medium%20to%20another%20or%20from%20a%20gradual%20change%20in%20the%20medium%2E%20Refraction%20of%20light%20is%20the%20most%20commonly%20observed%20phenomenon%2C%20but%20other%20waves%20such%20as%20sound%20waves%20and%20water%20waves%20also%20experience%20refraction%2E%20How%20much%20a%20wave%20is%20refracted%20is%20determined%20by%20the%20change%20in%20wave%20speed%20and%20the%20initial%20direction%20of%20wave%20propagation%20relative%20to%20the%20direction%20of%20change%20in%20speed%2E%0A%0AFor%20light%2C%20refraction%20follows%20Snell%27s%20law%2C%20which%20states%20that%2C%20for%20a%20given%20pair%20of%20media%2C%20the%20ratio%20of%20the%20sines%20of%20the%20angle%20of%20incidence%20%CE%B81%20and%20angle%20of%20refraction%20%CE%B82%20is%20equal%20to%20the%20ratio%20of%20phase%20velocities%20%28v1%20%2F%20v2%29%20in%20the%20two%20media%2C%20or%20equivalently%2C%20to%20the%20indices%20of%20refraction%20%28n2%20%2F%20n1%29%20of%20the%20two%20media%2E%0A%0ARefraction%20of%20light%20at%20the%20interface%20between%20two%20media%20of%20different%20refractive%20indices%2C%20with%20n2%20%20n1%2E%20Since%20the%20phase%20velocity%20is%20lower%20in%20the%20second%20medium%20%28v2%20%20v1%29%2C%20the%20angle%20of%20refraction%20%CE%B82%20is%20less%20than%20the%20angle%20of%20incidence%20%CE%B81%3B%20that%20is%2C%20the%20ray%20in%20the%20higher%2Dindex%20medium%20is%20closer%20to%20the%20normal%2E%0A%0AOptical%20prisms%20and%20lenses%20use%20refraction%20to%20redirect%20light%2C%20as%20does%20the%20human%20eye%2E%20The%20refractive%20index%20of%20materials%20varies%20with%20the%20wavelength%20of%20light%2C%20and%20thus%20the%20angle%20of%20the%20refraction%20also%20varies%20correspondingly%2E%20This%20is%20called%20dispersion%20and%20causes%20prisms%20and%20rainbows%20to%20divide%20white%20light%20into%20its%20constituent%20spectral%20colors%2E%0A%09%0A%09As%20described%20above%2C%20the%20speed%20of%20light%20is%20slower%20in%20a%20medium%20other%20than%20vacuum%2E%20This%20slowing%20applies%20to%20any%20medium%20such%20as%20air%2C%20water%2C%20or%20glass%2C%20and%20is%20responsible%20for%20phenomena%20such%20as%20refraction%2E%20When%20light%20leaves%20the%20medium%20and%20returns%20to%20a%20vacuum%2C%20and%20ignoring%20any%20effects%20of%20gravity%2C%20its%20speed%20returns%20to%20the%20usual%20speed%20of%20light%20in%20a%20vacuum%2C%20c%2E%0A%0ACommon%20explanations%20for%20this%20slowing%2C%20based%20upon%20the%20idea%20of%20light%20scattering%20from%2C%20or%20being%20absorbed%20and%20re%2Demitted%20by%20atoms%2C%20are%20both%20incorrect%2E%20Explanations%20like%20these%20would%20cause%20a%20%22blurring%22%20effect%20in%20the%20resulting%20light%2C%20as%20it%20would%20no%20longer%20be%20travelling%20in%20just%20one%20direction%2E%20But%20this%20effect%20is%20not%20seen%20in%20nature%2E%0A%0AA%20more%20correct%20explanation%20rests%20on%20light%27s%20nature%20as%20an%20electromagnetic%20wave%2E%20Because%20light%20is%20an%20oscillating%20electrical%2Fmagnetic%20wave%2C%20light%20traveling%20in%20a%20medium%20causes%20the%20electrically%20charged%20electrons%20of%20the%20material%20to%20also%20oscillate%2E%20%28The%20material%27s%20protons%20also%20oscillate%20but%20as%20they%20are%20around%202000%20times%20more%20massive%2C%20their%20movement%20and%20therefore%20their%20effect%2C%20is%20far%20smaller%29%2E%20A%20moving%20electrical%20charge%20emits%20electromagnetic%20waves%20of%20its%20own%2E%20The%20electromagnetic%20waves%20emitted%20by%20the%20oscillating%20electrons%2C%20interact%20with%20the%20electromagnetic%20waves%20that%20make%20up%20the%20original%20light%2C%20similar%20to%20water%20waves%20on%20a%20pond%2C%20a%20process%20known%20as%20constructive%20interference%2E%20When%20two%20waves%20interfere%20in%20this%20way%2C%20the%20resulting%20%22combined%22%20wave%20may%20have%20wave%20packets%20that%20pass%20an%20observer%20at%20a%20slower%20rate%2E%20The%20light%20has%20effectively%20been%20slowed%2E%20When%20the%20light%20leaves%20the%20material%2C%20this%20interaction%20with%20electrons%20no%20longer%20happens%2C%20and%20therefore%20the%20wave%20packet%20rate%20%28and%20therefore%20its%20speed%29%20return%20to%20normal%2E%20%0AConsider%20a%20wave%20going%20from%20one%20material%20to%20another%20where%20its%20speed%20is%20slower%20as%20in%20the%20figure%2E%20If%20it%20reaches%20the%20interface%20between%20the%20materials%20at%20an%20angle%20one%20side%20of%20the%20wave%20will%20reach%20the%20second%20material%20first%2C%20and%20therefore%20slow%20down%20earlier%2E%20With%20one%20side%20of%20the%20wave%20going%20slower%20the%20whole%20wave%20will%20pivot%20towards%20that%20side%2E%20This%20is%20why%20a%20wave%20will%20bend%20away%20from%20the%20surface%20or%20toward%20the%20normal%20when%20going%20into%20a%20slower%20material%2E%20In%20the%20opposite%20case%20of%20a%20wave%20reaching%20a%20material%
