Does it fit the projects scope?
Why?
As suggested by the owner of the repo I suggest to support tags. Tags are a great way to organize things outside of a classical folder structure. An item may have more than one tag where a hierarchical structure like a file system only allow for an item to be in one place at a time (symlinks help, but only to some extend).
Solution?
It should be easy to tag a note, eg. by adding hashtag + tagname: #<tagname>. Clicking a tag in "read mode" should list all notes with the same tag. It should be possible to "search" for two or more tags at the same time. Tags should have a default color and it should be possible to set a custom color.
Changing a tag should always happen from the note itself. Aside from the coloring aspect there should not be a tag management interface.

Hierarchical tags (optional)
