While the specific causes of SIDS are largely unknown, most agree that SIDS may occur when three risk factors coincide. These risk factors are:

When an infant has an genetic vulnerability

A genetic vulnerability can be considered a predisposition for problems with cardiac and respiratory control

When an infant is in a critical development period

SIDS-related deaths peak between two and four months of age

When an infant is placed in a stressful sleeping environment

Types of environmental stress can include an improper sleeping position,
exposure to tobacco smoke, or a sleeping environment that is too hot

When these factors combine, it is possible that an infant will stop breathing and die from lack of oxygen.[1]

Co-Sleeping

Co-sleeping has been frequently associated with SIDS-related deaths and SUDI (sudden unexplained death in infancy) deaths. While this risk factor is controversial, there is a significant correlation between co-sleeping and occurance of a SUDI death. Infants are particularly at risk if the caretaker they are co-sleeping with has recently used drugs or alcohol. Infants younger than 6 months are also at an additional risk for SUDI or SIDS when co-sleeping.[4]

Parents can't control genetics. Parents can't control their baby's age. But parents can control their baby's sleep environment.

The occurance of SIDS has decreased by over 50% since 1992. This decrease is largely due to the introduction of the Back to Sleep campaign. This campaign advises caretakers to place infants on their backs to sleep[1]. The Back to Sleep campaign has since expanded as the Safe to Sleep campaign to include additional recommendations regarding sleep environments.

Future Steps

SIDS affects African American and Native American babies disproportionately. Infants from these groups are at twice the risk for SIDS. This is largely due to cultural differences in sleep environments and practices. One of these practices is bed-sharing which can increase risk of SIDS. Additionally, poor infants are more likely to co-sleep and are thus at a higher risk for SIDS[1]. African American infants that have died from SIDS often died while co-sleeping or on a non-standard sleep surface[3]. Future research should be performed to discover how to design and implement effective interventions and information campaigns targeted to these groups.
