Include in the installation guide about the expected naming of the binary

I.e. You download the file as docker-credential-pass-v0.9.3.linux-amd64 but docker expects the binary to be called docker-credential-pass. This should be included in the docs.

looks like there is some broken logic behind this , i cannot find a value that works, it seems like docker-credential-pass cannot be used but it cannot work with anything

I think i can see the confusion -

pass is the name of ubuntu package that provides a password manager

this is colliding with weird naming logic of this command and some vague documentation which mentions copying this helper to a binary called 'pass' which is somehow fudged from docker-credential-pass .

please for the love of god refactor this code , its causing a huge amount of chaos and confusion and needs to be replaced.

Please just stop trying to be clever with the binary name , make it an absolute path and let us manage it

Said vague documentation, wherever you found it, is incorrect - the helper for pass that you download from here needs to be named docker-credential-pass and needs to be on the path. (That could be made clearer in the README.md, yes. It's the Docker CLI setting the requirement for the "docker-credential-X" name, not the code in this repository.) Then you set the "credsStore" key to "pass" (quote: "Set the credsStore option in your ~/.docker/config.json file with the suffix of the program you want to use.")

That particular helper will call pass to store and retrieve passwords, so you WILL need to install pass first - in your case, via the Ubuntu package - and then configure it to your liking (install a graphical helper? use gpg-agent?) before you start using this.

Another option is if the DBus secret service - which is available and included in many recent Linux distributions (GNOME Keyring and KWallet both implement it, for example) - works for you, you could use docker-credential-secretservice instead, which is ALSO downloadable from here. (I use Ubuntu for work and Omarchy on my personal desktop, and that's what I use.)
