If you already use Route53, its nice to have all of your ssh accessable, EC2 hosts with CNAME's to the Amazon external/internal compatible DNS name. Then you can use DNS throughout instead of EtcHosts.
Low level Amazon Route 53 support remains in AmazonWS but has not yet been integrated with --create-host, AmazonEC2 provider, or possibly Space.ssh_host_name
