animated focus

I want to have a one instance of my terminal so i made this:

bindsym $mod+Return exec scrollmsg '[app_id=$term]' focus || $term

but hitting the shortcut would go the the terminal instantly.
So it would be great if there was a focus_animte command.

If i have just created the window and went to another workspace and hit the shortcut in less then second it would get animated i think that because the animate option haven't yet get toggled.
note i am using .4 as the newer version seems to crash a lot in my system

I think 1.12.5 should be more stable and less buggy than 1.12.4, so it would be great if you used it (or the git version) and filed any issues you have so I can fix them. Otherwise you might have to stay in 1.12.4 forever, and there will be changes you will probably want in the near future.

If I do this:

bindsym $mod+q exec scrollmsg [app_id="kitty"] focus || kitty

When I press $mod+q, it either opens a new kitty terminal if there is none, or goes to the one I opened earlier. I think that is what you want.

About the animations, they only happen if there is a need. I mean, if you open more windows, and your terminal is out of the view, there will be an animation until the terminal is shown on screen. If the terminal is already in view, it will simply get focus, but there will be no animation because the terminal didn't move.

If the terminal is in another workspace and you expect a workspace_switch animation, that is not happening. Those animations are only for the workspace command (the user actively switching workspaces). But here you are using the focus command, which happens to need a change of workspace, but it doesn't go through the user deciding what workspace to switch to, it simply happens that the terminal that is getting focus is located in another workspace. That is the reason why there is no workspace switch animation, just a simple focus animation, because the command is the focus command. There could be a change of workspace detection and subsequent animation, but that doesn't exist yet. So it is a current limitation, not a real bug, you are doing the correct thing, that animation is simply not implemented. It wouldn't be a focus animation, that already exists, it would need to detect the change of workspace and chain two animations, which is not simple, because in general, the system only supports one animation at a time, and a new one, simply stops the one happening. This is to avoid the case where you could perform a bunch of actions and then have to wait for all the animations to finish.

Yeah that is because i am using zellij(a terminal multiplexer) so i would prefer every shell be in a pane within zellij instead of multiple terminals. but i tend to want to open a new terminal as a habit instead of a pane within zellij so i have put pidof prefix
to kill this habit.
But then sadly i also tend to forgot that i have opened the terminal or where did i open it. therefor added the focus prefix.
So it would be great if there ware the two animations so could know which workspace and which part of the workspace is this mysterious terminal window(:

Of course you can, I just don't know how much of a priority it will be. I mean, the solution may need to change how the animation system works, and if that is the case, it is too big a change for something so small. Or it may only need a special animation, like there is for workspace switch (different from the main animation system). That change is not as big, but still not something I can do in an afternoon. Feel free to open a feature request if you want to, though.
