Proper image defaults

Currently, the default way to download an image is png, which might not be ideal. Especially since it is not completely obvious that this can be changed in settings (as opposed to previous version where you had a dropdown next to the download button). Maybe the default could be changed to a vector format such as svg or pdf.
Ideally it is also transparent to the user that this could be changed.

On another note, the current default settings regarding images are just not looking nice. Legend is too big, actual plot is too small, so it's not really "paper-ready".

Please take this critique as nicely as possible. I'm just looking at a lot of tools proteomics tools and I know, I would critisize them for it. I just don't want the same to happen to PROTzilla, especially since we are actually able to do better.
Maybe you are already planning on changing it in the new frontend. I just want you to keep that in mind.

Thank you for your detailed feedback! I would like to address your points individually:

This setting was previously the default for Plotly, which is why we selected it. We are happy to set svg as default, which makes much more sense for publications.

Moving the dropdown to the settings section was because we wanted to have all the general settings that apply generally for all plots in one place. Or is there a use case where the format is constantly changed?

Do you have any ideas on how this can be made even more transparent? I would assume that as soon as you are dissatisfied with a setting, you look for settings that (we hope) will conform with user expectations ("Erwartungskonformität") at the top. Or at some point, you will start to apply all guidelines of the conference you prepare your paper for to the Plotly template by going to the settings section.

You're right, of course. Currently, Plotly applies their default template to all properties, where we don't specify it. We will enable more settings after the migration, besides font and size, so that you can change (almost) every property of Plotly.

Also, on this note: It was not really possible to offer many settings with the current frontend because the page had to be reloaded with every change in order to update and display the Plotly figure. With the new frontend, we have already built a Plotly component that will make this possible. So stay tuned! 😉

You are completely right, changing the default should mitigate most of the issues, since frequent changing of file format is not expected.

That's an excellent question. My main concern is that people might not expect that they can change the plots in the settings page because a lot of proteomics tools don't have this level of customization. I could be wrong though and it's super obvious to users.
It should at least be added to the user guide (after the frontend rework). Maybe the settings button could be more expressive (e.g. a button in the header that states "plot settings", but ofc. that would be a stylistic downgrade).
