Token Efficiency: 98.7% Savings

Traditional Approach

Agent: "Navigate to website"
[Tool call overhead: 500 tokens]

Agent: "Extract text from page"
[Full page content: 50,000 tokens loaded into context]

Agent: "Filter to relevant section"
[Processing in agent context: 50,000 tokens again]

Total: ~100,500 tokens per request

MCP Code Execution Approach

# Agent writes executable code:
url = "https://example.com/article"
await mcp.browser.navigate(url)
text = await mcp.browser.extract_text(url, selector="article")

# Data processing happens in sandbox (NOT in agent context)
summary = text[:500]  # Filter before returning

print(summary) # Only filtered result goes to agent

# Total: ~2,000 tokens (98% reduction)

Key Insight: Processing happens in the sandbox, not in the expensive agent context window.

Core Components

1. Code Execution Sandbox

Files:

  • core/execution_context.py - Workspace management & state persistence
  • core/code_executor.py - RestrictedPython execution engine
  • security/sandbox_limits.py - Security configuration

Features:

  • ✅ RestrictedPython sandbox (no unsafe operations)
  • ✅ 30-second timeout per execution
  • ✅ 512MB memory limit
  • ✅ Isolated workspace per session
  • ✅ State persistence via memory system
  • ✅ Stdout/stderr capture & filtering

Security Boundaries:

  • No file system access outside workspace
  • No network access except via MCP tools
  • No subprocess spawning
  • No import of dangerous modules
  • Automatic cleanup after execution

2. MCP Client Infrastructure

Files:

  • core/mcp_registry.py - Server registration & lifecycle management
  • core/mcp_client.py - MCP protocol client implementation

Features:

  • ✅ SQLite-backed server registry
  • ✅ Dynamic tool discovery from MCP servers
  • ✅ Stdio transport (HTTP support planned)
  • ✅ Automatic code interface generation
  • ✅ Connection pooling & management
  • ✅ Server health monitoring

Registry Operations:

  • Register/unregister servers
  • Enable/disable without removal
  • Track server metadata & capabilities
  • Persist configuration across restarts

3. Skills Learning System

File: core/skills_manager.py

Concept: Intention-Based Skill Clustering

Traditional approach: Save skills by name

skills = {
    "wikipedia_search": code1,
    "arxiv_search": code2,
    # Agent doesn't see the pattern similarity
}

Intention-based approach: Save skills with semantic metadata

skill = {
    "name": "information_retrieval_web",
    "intentions": ["information_retrieval", "web_interaction"],
    "patterns": ["http_request", "parse_html", "extract_text"],
    "applicable_to": ["wikipedia", "documentation", "academic"],
    "code": executable_code,
    "use_count": 15,
    "success_count": 14
}

Semantic Discovery Flow:

  1. Agent needs: "How to get info from ArXiv?"
  2. Search finds: Skills with information_retrieval + academic tags
  3. Agent discovers: "This Wikipedia pattern works for ArXiv too!"
  4. Result: Cross-domain knowledge transfer

Benefits:

  • Pattern reuse across similar tasks
  • Automatic skill composition
  • Success rate tracking
  • Domain-agnostic learning

4. Browser MCP Server

Files:

  • mcp_servers/browser/server.py - Main server implementation
  • mcp_servers/browser/tools.py - Browser automation tools
  • mcp_servers/browser/vision.py - Vision analysis integration
  • mcp_servers/browser/security.py - Security policies

Available Tools:

  1. navigate(url) - Navigate browser to URL
  2. screenshot(url, analyze=True) - Capture + optional vision analysis
  3. extract_text(url, selector) - Extract text from elements
  4. click(url, selector) - Click page elements
  5. fill_form(url, fields) - Fill form fields
  6. get_links(url) - Extract all hyperlinks
  7. search_google(query) - Perform Google search
  8. add_to_whitelist(domain) - Security management

Security Features:

Domain Whitelist (pre-approved):

  • wikipedia.org (all language variants)
  • github.com
  • arxiv.org
  • stackoverflow.com
  • developer.mozilla.org
  • And other safe domains

Domain Blacklist (blocked):

  • Banking sites
  • Payment processors
  • Social media login pages
  • Government portals

Rate Limiting:

  • 10 navigations per minute
  • 5 screenshots per minute
  • 20 text extractions per minute
  • 10 form fills per minute

Vision Integration:

  • Powered by Gemini 2.0 Flash (free tier)
  • Automatic screenshot analysis
  • Multiple focus modes:
    • general - Overall page understanding
    • navigation - UI element identification
    • content - Main content extraction
    • forms - Form field detection

Integration Points

Backend Integration

Modified Files:

  • api/server.py - Initialize MCP infrastructure on startup
  • core/consciousness_loop.py - Handle execute_code tool calls
  • tools/code_execution_tool.py - Tool schema definition

Startup Sequence:

# On server start
1. Initialize MCP Registry (load registered servers)
2. Initialize MCP Client (stdio transport ready)
3. Initialize Skills Manager (load learned patterns)
4. Initialize Code Executor (sandbox ready)
5. Register Browser MCP Server (if not already registered)
6. Connect to all enabled MCP servers
7. Agent gains access to execute_code tool

Execution Flow:

# When agent calls execute_code
1. Agent writes Python code with task logic
2. Code submitted to CodeExecutor
3. Sandbox environment created
4. Code compiled with RestrictedPython
5. Execution context provides:
   - mcp.* namespace (MCP tool access)
   - memory.* namespace (memory operations)
   - workspace.* namespace (file operations)
6. Code executes with timeout & limits
7. Stdout/stderr captured
8. Only filtered output returned to agent
9. Workspace persisted for session
10. Execution metrics logged

print(summary)

Example 2: Vision-Based Analysis

# Screenshot with automatic vision analysis

await mcp.browser.navigate("https://example.com/contact")
await mcp.browser.fill_form("https://example.com/contact", [
    {"selector": "#name", "value": "Test User"},
    {"selector": "#email", "value": "test@example.com"},
    {"selector": "#message", "value": "Hello!"}
])
await mcp.browser.click("https://example.com/contact", "button[type=submit]")

    "patterns": ["navigate", "extract_text", "summarize"],
    "applicable_to": ["wikipedia", "documentation", "articles"],
    "success": True
})

# Later, search for similar patterns
skills = await skills.find_by_intention("information_retrieval")
# Agent discovers: "I can reuse this pattern!"

Common Issues

"Address already in use" on startup

# Kill existing process on port
lsof -ti:8284 | xargs kill -9

"RestrictedPython compilation failed"

  • Check for unsafe operations (file I/O, imports)
  • Use provided namespaces (mcp., memory., workspace.*)
  • Avoid eval(), exec(), compile()

"MCP server connection timeout"

  • Verify server is running: ps aux | grep mcp_servers
  • Check logs: tail -f logs/backend.log
  • Restart server: pm2 restart browser-mcp

"Browser automation blocked"

  • Domain not in whitelist: Use add_to_whitelist(domain)
  • Rate limit exceeded: Wait 60s
  • Check security logs
