The destiny of `codespan` (and `codespan-reporting`)

It seems that, in 2019, in rust-lang/annotate-snippets-rs#11, wycats/language-reporting#6, and rust-lang/annotate-snippets-rs#13, there was some interest in merging codespan into @rust-lang's annotate-snippets, but those conversations have lain open without new comments for years. In 2020, it was said that codespan was to be de-emphasised and eventually deprecated in favor of codespan-reporting.

What intentions are there currently, if any, for merging or deprecating codespan in favor of another library? For someone looking to choose one of these libraries for the first time, should such intentions make codespan-reporting or annotate-snippets look more appealing?
