Request: persist table of contents state #5

Love the table of contents. I wish the app and new documents would open with the last used state.
Right now, it's always closed - a reasonable default. But it would be nice if I enabled the Contents in one document, each subsequent document I open would have it open as well.
Not a straight forward problem, because what happens if I have 2 docs open: one with the Contents open and one with Contents closed and I select the document window with Contents closed and then open another document?
Maybe it's as simple as a setting to invert the default: "Always open Contents". Then all docs have Contents open and I can close it on a per-document basis.
