Can't navigate SD card

I've been trying v0.3.1 on my X4 with no success. Here's what I did:-

1. Reformatted the stock SD card with ExFAT on macOS Sonoma.
2. Converted one EPUB with tern-book and copied it into the root directory.
3. Manually removed all the other metadata dotfiles and dotdirs that macOS typically writes. Confirmed that only one file remained, the converted ebook.
4. Flashed v0.3.1 from ternreader.org, then restarted
5. From the home screen, press Down to highlight the Files icon, then press Select. The screen flashes to a directory listing of my SD card showing the single ebook for two seconds, then flips back to the home screen.
6. Repeat Step 5 three more times to confirm it's repeatable.
7. Connected to the X4 via ternreader.org to confirm that the SD card is readable. Here's the screenshot:-

I note two anomalies:-

1. Showing 2 entries in /, but there's only one file there.
2. The USB log has a CRC mismatch line.

The X4's display also says the following:

USB File Access

USB mode active
Last cmd 0x01 req 1

Eject in host or Back to exit

Pressing Back doesn't do anything, and there's no Eject option on ternreader.org

Anything else I can do to help nail down the problem?

Managed to dig up a Linux laptop to double-check the SD card contents, in case macOS snuck some metadata back in that was confusing TernReader. No such luck:

So I tried reformatting the SD card on Linux as FAT32, then copied the same ebook into the root directory. Same problem, the directory listing appears for about 2 seconds, then flips back to the Recents view on the home screen.
