I don't appreciate soco creating yet another .program_name directory in $HOME.

Thanks. There is a dormant/nascent pull request to fix this: #57. I'll close this issue in favour of the PR.

The only minor complication / extra work is making sure existing state is correctly relocated; I don't want to clobber existing users.
