From a40b0445253b917139f98777d3fc718125d0c940 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Paul Flynn Date: Tue, 5 May 2026 15:28:43 -0400 Subject: [PATCH] fix(rendering): VRM 0.x/1.0 color mismatch, blend modes, lighting, sRGB output MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Fixes multiple rendering issues that caused VRM 0.x and 1.0 exports of the same model to look dramatically different, plus related material/lighting bugs. ## Bugs Fixed ### VRM 1.0 integer color parsing failure AnyCodable decodes JSON integers like [1,1,1] as [Int], but parseMToonExtension used as? [Double] casts. These silently failed, causing shadeColorFactor/matcapFactor/rimColor/outlineColor to fall back to defaults (black for shade). Added floatArray(from:count:) helper that handles Int/Double/Float elements. ### VRM 0.0 shadeMultiplyTexture incorrectly skipped toMToonMaterial() skipped shadeMultiplyTexture when _ShadeTexture == _MainTex, but Unity MToon multiplies shade color by this texture even when they're the same. Removed the inequality guard so VRM 0.0 matches Unity behavior. ### VRM 0.x _BlendMode -> alphaMode mapping (#145-147 follow-up) Added mapping in VRMGeometry.swift: _BlendMode 0→OPAQUE, 1→MASK, 2/3→BLEND. Fixes transparent materials on AliciaSolid_v0.51, VRoid, PompaGirl, Vita_clothing, Ao_dress, AnnieV0. ### Non-face transparentWithZWrite depth write Added blendZWrite depth stencil state (.lessEqual + depthWrite ON) for non-face BLEND materials with isTransparentWithZWrite=true. ### sRGB output color space Changed default colorPixelFormat from .bgra8Unorm to .bgra8Unorm_srgb in StrictMode.swift. Fixes harsh contrast and crushed blacks. ### MToon lighting fixes (#145-147) - giIntensityFactor now scales indirect diffuse instead of replacing it - Removed unconditional emissive zeroing - Raised default ambient to 0.15, added fill/rim lights ## Tests Added - GitHubIssues145_146_147_Tests.swift (lighting TDD) - AliciaSolidBlendModeTests.swift (_BlendMode mapping) - AliciaSolidDressDebugTests.swift (transparent overlay isolation) - CorpusBlendModeDiagnosticTests.swift (corpus-wide blend mode scan) - IssueVisualComparisonTests.swift (render output comparisons) All 1207 tests pass. --- Sources/VRMMetalKit/Core/StrictMode.swift | 4 +- Sources/VRMMetalKit/Core/VRMTypes.swift | 8 +- .../VRMMetalKit/Renderer/VRMGeometry.swift | 54 ++- .../Renderer/VRMRenderer+Pipeline.swift | 8 + .../VRMMetalKit/Renderer/VRMRenderer.swift | 29 +- .../VRMMetalKit/Renderer/VRMUniforms.swift | 21 +- .../Resources/VRMMetalKitShaders.metallib | Bin 231412 -> 231460 bytes Sources/VRMMetalKit/Shaders/MToonShader.metal | 6 +- .../AliciaSolidBlendModeTests.swift | 145 +++++++ .../AliciaSolidDressDebugTests.swift | 103 +++++ .../CorpusBlendModeDiagnosticTests.swift | 175 ++++++++ .../GitHubIssues145_146_147_Tests.swift | 271 +++++++++++++ .../IssueVisualComparisonTests.swift | 374 ++++++++++++++++++ .../MSAAAlphaToCoverageTests.swift | 2 +- .../MToonLightingFactorTests.swift | 16 + Tests/VRMMetalKitTests/VRMRendererTests.swift | 9 +- 16 files changed, 1179 insertions(+), 46 deletions(-) create mode 100644 Tests/VRMMetalKitTests/AliciaSolidBlendModeTests.swift create mode 100644 Tests/VRMMetalKitTests/AliciaSolidDressDebugTests.swift create mode 100644 Tests/VRMMetalKitTests/CorpusBlendModeDiagnosticTests.swift create mode 100644 Tests/VRMMetalKitTests/GitHubIssues145_146_147_Tests.swift create mode 100644 Tests/VRMMetalKitTests/IssueVisualComparisonTests.swift diff --git a/Sources/VRMMetalKit/Core/StrictMode.swift b/Sources/VRMMetalKit/Core/StrictMode.swift index 5152dbec..277527b7 100644 --- a/Sources/VRMMetalKit/Core/StrictMode.swift +++ b/Sources/VRMMetalKit/Core/StrictMode.swift @@ -43,7 +43,7 @@ public struct RendererConfig { public var strict: StrictLevel = .off /// Color attachment pixel format for render pipelines (defaults to match MTKView default) - public var colorPixelFormat: MTLPixelFormat = .bgra8Unorm + public var colorPixelFormat: MTLPixelFormat = .bgra8Unorm_srgb /// Enable Metal validation layers (debug builds only) public var enableMetalValidation: Bool = true @@ -77,7 +77,7 @@ public struct RendererConfig { /// Higher values push coplanar surfaces further apart in depth buffer public var depthBiasScale: Float = 1.0 - public init(strict: StrictLevel = .off, colorPixelFormat: MTLPixelFormat = .bgra8Unorm, renderFilter: RenderFilter? = nil, drawUntil: Int? = nil, drawOnlyIndex: Int? = nil, testIdentityPalette: Int? = nil, sampleCount: Int = 1, depthBiasScale: Float = 1.0) { + public init(strict: StrictLevel = .off, colorPixelFormat: MTLPixelFormat = .bgra8Unorm_srgb, renderFilter: RenderFilter? = nil, drawUntil: Int? = nil, drawOnlyIndex: Int? = nil, testIdentityPalette: Int? = nil, sampleCount: Int = 1, depthBiasScale: Float = 1.0) { self.strict = strict self.colorPixelFormat = colorPixelFormat self.renderFilter = renderFilter diff --git a/Sources/VRMMetalKit/Core/VRMTypes.swift b/Sources/VRMMetalKit/Core/VRMTypes.swift index c83f0c70..6e622aa7 100644 --- a/Sources/VRMMetalKit/Core/VRMTypes.swift +++ b/Sources/VRMMetalKit/Core/VRMTypes.swift @@ -352,10 +352,10 @@ public struct VRM0MaterialProperty { mtoon.shadingShiftFactor = shadingShiftFactor // Shade texture from texture properties - // Skip when same as main texture - prevents blue padding artifacts - if let shadeTexIndex = textureProperties["_ShadeTexture"], - let mainTexIndex = textureProperties["_MainTex"], - shadeTexIndex != mainTexIndex { + // When _ShadeTexture == _MainTex (common in VRM 0.0), we still set it + // so the shader multiplies shadeColorFactor by the texture, matching + // Unity MToon behavior.
