Is your feature request related to a problem?
I recently got interested in the Genius menu on my iPod and realized I’ve never actually had a chance to try it properly. From what I understand, it was something like a smart playlist / auto-generated mix based on a selected track, and it sounds like a really interesting feature.
The problem is that I don’t fully understand how Genius worked in practice, and I also can’t test it the original way because iTunes does not detect my iPod at all anymore lol. So right now this is one of those old iPod features that feels interesting, but is basically inaccessible.
Describe the solution you'd like
It would be really interesting if iOpenPod could support something similar to Genius, or introduce its own version of that idea.
For example, maybe a feature that could:
- generate a playlist based on a selected song
- group together tracks that are likely to fit the same mood / style
- work like a “smart recommendation playlist” for the music already synced to the iPod
I’m not asking for an exact recreation of Apple’s original Genius, especially since I’m not fully sure how it worked internally. But a feature with a similar result would be very cool to try.
Describe alternatives you've considered
The only alternative I know of is using old iTunes, where Genius used to be available. But in my case iTunes does not see my iPod anymore, so that path is basically blocked.
Another alternative is just using regular playlists or smart playlists, but those don’t seem quite the same thing. My understanding is that Genius was more like an automatic “this song goes well with these other songs” system.
Additional context
The reason I’m asking is mostly curiosity: I saw the Genius menu on the iPod and it made me want to understand and actually try that kind of feature.
Even if full Genius compatibility is not possible, maybe it would be interesting to implement a new recommendation-based playlist system inspired by it.
