The issue is that if I sit on a train or a bus facing sideways or backwards the audio is being presented based on the direction of travel and so is incorrect. For example:
- Facing backwards on train
- Slows down into station and drops out of "travel mode"
- Station facilities on the right are being called out as if they were on the left
The assumption is always that the user is facing the direction of travel. If the phone were unlocked then it gets it right, but it can't tell from a locked phone which direction the user is facing. Head tracking would help here as that would work when the phone is locked too. Other than that, the only way around it is for the user to tell the app which way that they are facing e.g. when the train is moving press a button to indicate that the phone is putting the direction they are facing.
