I guess it may be possible to gen World Machine Edition-like experience with Windows version of OneShot being launched via Wine or Proton with Virtual Desktop enabled. Though I have yet to find a way to actually do this

It may even be possible to accomplish this using a single string typed in "Launch Option" of the game in Steam, but again - I have no idea how this string should look like for everything to work properly

I sadly still get failed to initialize steamworks when steam is open, i have arch(running a wayland compositor), and steam and protontricks are installed as system packages, i just want to finish the game :(.
It would also be nice to tell people that under wayland u have limitations

I'm really inexperienced with software (I took a couple of coding classes years ago but have never learned to be a real contributor) but I feel like a compatability layer and/or maybe some scripts could be used to make OneShot convenient to play, at least on something like the Steam Deck. A OneShot-specific fork of Proton is an interesting idea I think...! Then maybe even the wallpaper could work properly, and it could be as convenient as installing the custom build.

steam is open on my host machine and steamshim refuses to connect to steamworks... im on arch

I got stuck on running the _______.exe file, presumably as I'm using steam within flatpak. Do you have any experience in this?

the steam library is generally located at ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/.local/share/Steam

running protontricks commands through flatpak can be done like so: flatpak run --command=protontricks-launch com.github.Matoking.protontricks --appid 420530 ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/OneShot/steamshim.exe

giving protontricks access to one's steam library can be done like so: flatpak override --user --filesystem=~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/.local/share/Steam com.github.Matoking.protontricks

This does, however, result in the same error as described above ("Failed to initialize Steamworks"), even though steam is running.

We sadly haven't tested this with Flatpak, and we're not sure what can be done with the "Failed to initialize Steamworks" error at the moment. Last time we tried this, it was a year ago and we used NixOS.

We updated the article to mention there is OneShot: The World Machine Edition as a substitute for the time being. We'll investigate the error and see what we can do about it. Thanks!

For those having trouble with "Failed to initialize Steamworks" when running _______.exe alongside steamshim.exe, I used SteamTinkerLauncher to add the _______.exe program as an extra command with a 5 second delay before the game starts. This worked for me and I had no problems running the game.
