Controller events received in Activity tab but no shifting action reaches MyWhoosh — Android, reproduced across 2 devices and 2 controllers #377

Description

@elBoz73

Summary

BikeControl (bought the base version) connects to MyWhoosh successfully (OpenBikeControl icon turns blue, pairing popup accepted), and controller button presses are correctly logged in the Activity tab. However, no shifting action ever reaches MyWhoosh — the virtual gear number never changes in-game.

Reproduced with two different controllers and three different device combinations, which rules out the Zwift Click V2 firmware lock as the cause.

Environment

  • BikeControl: 6.3 (Base licence, Play Store)
  • MyWhoosh: 5.8.2 (Android)
  • Trainer: Wahoo KICKR CORE 2 ("KICKR CORE 5250"), Zwift Cog + Click V2 bundle
  • Devices tested:
    • XP-Pen Magic Drawing Pad 2025 — Android 14, MediaTek MT8771, 8 GB RAM (manufacturer Android skin)
    • Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 5G
  • Controllers tested:
    • Zwift Click V2 (firmware not updated)
    • 8BitDo Bluetooth gamepad

Configurations tested

BikeControl on MyWhoosh on Method Result
XP-Pen tablet XP-Pen tablet Network Paired, no shifting
XP-Pen tablet XP-Pen tablet Accessibility No shifting
Redmi Note 14 5G XP-Pen tablet Network Paired, no shifting
Redmi Note 14 5G Redmi Note 14 5G Network Paired, no shifting

Same negative result with both the Click V2 and the 8BitDo gamepad in every configuration.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open BikeControl, pair controller — connects successfully
  2. Trainer connection → select MyWhoosh → enable Network method
  3. Open MyWhoosh → Device Connection screen → tap the OpenBikeControl icon (top right)
  4. Accept the pairing popup — icon turns blue, connection reported as established
  5. Tap Ride, enter the session
  6. Press mapped buttons → events appear in BikeControl Activity tab, but the gear indicator in MyWhoosh does not change

What works (ruling things out)

  • MyWhoosh virtual shifting itself works: tapping the on-screen MyShift arrows manually changes gears correctly
  • Trainer is fully connected: power, cadence, resistance and virtual steering all show green in the MyWhoosh Device Connection screen
  • Controller input reaches BikeControl: button presses are visible in the Activity tab, including presses made while MyWhoosh is in the foreground (so this is not an Android background-suspension issue)
  • Pairing itself succeeds: the OpenBikeControl icon turns blue and the popup is accepted every time

Already checked

  • Battery optimisation disabled, background activity and autostart allowed for BikeControl
  • Nearby devices and local network permissions granted
  • Accessibility permission granted (also tried after enabling restricted settings)
  • Both apps on the same Wi-Fi network
  • App restart, device restart, re-pairing — no change

Additional notes

The fact that a plain 8BitDo gamepad — which has no proprietary firmware restriction — fails identically to the Click V2 suggests the issue is in the BikeControl → MyWhoosh action delivery, not in controller decoding.

On MyWhoosh I have to connect directly to the CORE 5250, I cannot select BikeControl as controler. I did a try by skipping it, but same result no gear MyWhoosh

Happy to provide logs, screenshots of the Activity tab, or run any test that would help narrow this down.
