Fixed by a3b0568 ("fix: preserve splitOrientation in demo without source"), which introduced a splitOrientation field so getOrientation() returns that field directly instead of calling currentLayout.getOrientation(). No null check is needed anymore since currentLayout is no longer dereferenced in this method.
