Error "could not build executable res!"

Hi,

I am installing ESP-r via the source code onto an Ubuntu virtual machine (following the process shown by Dr. Hand here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfxPFSBV6ps&ab_channel=jon.in.glasgow ) although, I have downloaded the source code from https://www.esru.strath.ac.uk//Downloads/downloads.htm#ESP-r rather than the method shown in the video.

I have followed all steps and was able to execute the Install script but am receiving the error "could not build executable res!" when the machine tries to download the results module of ESP-r.

I have included a copy of the text which then follows.

Any help identifying and solving the issue would be much appreciated.

Ah, newer Fortran compilers seem to be sensitive to that. Code has been passed in to correctly set the type for the variables but it is not yet on the download site. One approach is to use a slightly older Fortran - gfortran V8 or 9 might do the trick. You can wait for the distribution to be updated or I can pass you a link a newer source distribution. Out of my own curiosity (as working with software in this manner is something new to me) how would you apply your suggestion of using an older Fortran work in this case?

Hi there, on Ubuntu, you can install packages with a package manager via “apt get <desired-package>”. Often, you can specify the version of the package, here e.g. gcc8 or gcc9 (which should include the corresponding Fortran). Of course, then you need to specifically call this version during setup via the —compiler-version flag. Best Achim

Here is a newer version of mosensa.F which goes in the eres folder. It should deal with that error message. Let me know if this works.
