Insufficient permissions on everything - APC UPS USB > ESXi > Ubuntu VM > Nutify

I've mapped the USB device in ESXi to the Ubuntu VM and can see the device in lsusb. Running sudo lsusb -s 002:004 -v returns the UPS details including the serial number.
However the Nutify instance can't detect the UPS. I get to the end of the wizard and test the configuration and it returns the following:

Failed to start NUT drivers: libusb1: Could not open any HID devices: insufficient permissions on everything No matching HID UPS found Driver failed to start (exit status=1)

Not sure where the permissions are required so any pointers would be appreciated please.
