Compatibility with Webpack

A vanilla Rails 6 app includes webpack by default. There is some incompatibility with the way we're loading javascript here.

I don't have any apps with Webpack enable yet. Help Wanted. :)

Adding this line to the new app's app/assets/config/manifest.js fixes the file not found issue.

It does NOT solve the issue of javascript. I'm not stoked on needing a second package manager (NPM). I'm going to go ahead and rant that webpack feels so half baked in Rails. It's not even in the RailGuide yet, and you have to figure this stuff out reading random blogs. Personally I'm going to skip it until Sprockets is no longer an option.
