Jackerbox Implementation Summary

We've successfully implemented several key features to enhance the Jackerbox platform:

1. Availability Calendar

Implemented Components:

  • AvailabilityCalendar component for displaying and managing equipment availability
  • API endpoints for fetching, creating, and deleting availability periods
  • Integration with the equipment detail page
  • Visual indicators for available dates and booked dates

Features:

  • Equipment owners can mark dates as available by clicking and dragging on the calendar
  • Renters can see available dates when browsing equipment
  • Prevents double bookings by checking for conflicts
  • Color-coded to show available, pending, and booked dates

2. Real-time Messaging System

Implemented Components:

  • ChatInterface component for real-time messaging between users
  • API endpoints for sending, retrieving, and marking messages as read
  • Messaging inbox page to display all conversations
  • "Contact Owner" button on equipment detail pages

Features:

  • Users can send messages to equipment owners
  • Real-time updates with typing indicators
  • Unread message indicators
  • Context-aware messaging (linking messages to specific equipment)
  • Notification system for new messages

3. Reviews and Ratings

Implemented Components:

  • ReviewForm component for submitting reviews
  • API endpoints for creating and retrieving reviews
  • Review page for submitting reviews after completed rentals
  • Display of reviews on equipment detail pages

Features:

  • Star rating system (1-5 stars)
  • Detailed text reviews
  • Verification that only renters who completed a rental can leave reviews
  • Automatic calculation of average ratings
  • Notifications for equipment owners when they receive new reviews

4. Review Voting System

Implemented Components:

  • ReviewHelpfulness component for voting on reviews
  • ReviewStatistics component for displaying review statistics
  • API endpoints for voting, retrieving votes, and calculating statistics
  • Database schema updates to support review votes

Features:

  • Users can vote on whether reviews are helpful or unhelpful
  • Vote counts are displayed on each review
  • Users can change or remove their votes
  • Review statistics show helpfulness percentages
  • Helps users identify the most valuable reviews

Integration Points

These features are integrated throughout the application:

  1. Navigation:

    • Added messages link to the main navbar
    • Added messages link to the dashboard sidebar

  2. Equipment Detail Page:

    • Added availability calendar
    • Added "Contact Owner" button
    • Enhanced review display with voting functionality
    • Added review statistics

  3. User Dashboard:

    • Added messaging access
    • Improved notification system

Technical Highlights

  • Used React Hook Form with Zod validation for forms
  • Implemented optimistic UI updates for better user experience
  • Created comprehensive API endpoints with proper validation
  • Added proper authorization checks throughout
  • Enhanced the notification system to support new notification types
  • Implemented custom React hooks for state management

Next Steps

To further enhance these features:

  1. Availability Calendar:

    • Add recurring availability patterns
    • Implement calendar sync with external calendars

  2. Messaging System:

    • Implement WebSockets for true real-time messaging
    • Add file/image sharing in messages

  3. Reviews and Ratings:

    • Implement sorting and filtering of reviews by helpfulness
    • Add review reporting functionality
    • Enhance the rating algorithm with weighted scores

These implementations provide a solid foundation for the core functionality of the Jackerbox platform, making it more interactive and user-friendly.
