4/8
Today we finished Friday's assignment and began the next project.
I'll be working with megan kokoris and we are using the mgc catalog to look for galaxies!
We are having some issues with the text file but we will sort that out
4/10
BLACK HOLE DAY! We started looking at the black hole image released today and then discussed sacrificing a chicken to get our data.
Weird day tbh. Megan and I worked with our code, we ran into issues with the RA and DEC(apparently our data is ancient oops) but we got
it to work out (I hope). Due to these issues, our code is on Megan's computer and I was working with her to write the code together.
I looked at her screen and we tried different suggestions in our code. We spent most of the class troubleshooting
4/12
This day's entry was deleted somehow, but I worked with troubleshooting my code and uploading an image of what it should look
like.
4/15
May 20, first draft due, may 29, another draft due, june 7 final due
For this research paper, I want to use ARCSAT to observe nearby galaxies and look for star formation. I will use the optical and H-alpha
capabilities from the telescope and compare spiral and elliptical galaxies!
4/17
Today we worked with fits stuff and my windows device could not open the files correctly. Megan let me to work with her, and this
was OK'd by Meredith.
4/19
Finishing up the FITS stuff. Drew a lovely diagram for class on how photons get to fits files. I turned in my project proposal and I am
extremely excited to get started. Friday Joke: How many ears does Captain Kirk have? Three: The left ear, the right ear, and the final
fronteir. (Please don't take points away I know its bad)
4/22
Today we talked about CCDs. I learned we have to cool CCDs. Emission tubes are also really fun! We got to look at a bunch of gases
and try and figure out what they are.
4/24
I didn't realize Professor Tuttle was in friends!! (https://friends.fandom.com/wiki/Sarah_Tuttle) Today I compiled a list of objects I
could observe for my project. I have found different kinds of galaxies as well as some open and globular clusters to search for
star formation!
4/26
Today Meredith taught us some uses with pandas and data files.
Friday Joke: Orion's Belt is a big waist of space. (Terrible joke I know, I give it three stars)
4/29
Today we started the big CCD lab packet thing. I also got scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday night for ARCSAT so I am excited
to use the telescope and pull two all-nighters!!!!!
5/1
Today my group did the CCD lab. I observed at arcsat last night so I am pretty tired, and I observe again tonight! Got a great image
of M51!
5/3
Happy Friday! I had a blast working with ARCSAT this week. Thank you so much for the help and the opportunity. I worked on the
ccd lab in class today, and will begin to analyze my fits images from ARCSAT. Friday Joke: I was up all night wondering where the sun
went. Then it dawned on me.
5/6
Monday: Discussed CCD terms, paper due in a week!! We did some math, I got it horribly wrong.
5/8
I am beginning to feel extremely overwhelmed. With the CCD lab, the research project, and now the Reducing Data lab, I feel like all
the deadlines are crashing down and I'm drowning. I'm trying to get a bunch of work done outside of class but my other classesand my
research assignments are just as demanding. These last four weeks will truly be a race to get everything done in a short amount of
time.
5/10
I'm realizing i forgot to get this submit on time. I'm sorry! I am extremely stressed out and overwhelmed by everything this week so
I'll do my best to get everything in on time.
5/13
Today I worked on the photometry lab! getting started with the master bias and flats using my data from my observing so I'm getting a
start.
5/15
Continued to work on the lab! slowly making progress, this stuff is hard!
5/17
Happy Syttende Mai! (Norweigan constituion day) Thank you for pushing the photometry deadline back! I'm still struggling on it but
will likely get it done next week. I have been kinda working on my paper, but now I am able to really focus on it with the lab pushed
back. Final paper due June 7. Friday Joke: Have you heard of the band 999 megabytes? They're really good but haven't got a gig yet.
5/20
I'm in for a rough week. I have a midterm on thursday and my rough draft is not great. We shall see how this week goes.
5/22
Today was a work day so I worked on finishing up the Data Reduction lab. We got our peer review back so I know how I need to be
editing my paper.
5/24
Today we turned in the data reduction lab, and we started a new lab: SDSS Survey Lab. We are getting data around M67, and then matching
to archival data. We will turn in on Canvas and answer the bolded questions on the lab. Friday Joke: What washes up on really small
beaches? micro-waves
5/29
We turned in our second drafts today, I fell behind due to some technical difficulties with my data. I'm working to get caught up on
analysing the data, and catching up on my writing. I doubled the size of my first draft with this second one, and found more sources
so I should be well on my way to a 10 page paper by next friday. I worked on my SDSS lab today so that should be fine theoretically.
I was going to get more work done on the lab but had to divert some time into looking into the Grace Hopper convention in October.
I have mostly all other distractions out of the way (I just have two more homework assignments in other classes) and I will be able
to fully commit to writing my paper and the labs.
5/31
Last day of May! Today I worked on the SDSS lab, I had to run to another class but spoke with professor tuttle about turning it in
tomorrow! Friday Joke: I was reading a book on Helium, and I just couldn't put it down.
6/3
Its June! TOday we talked about machine learning, and how some researches tried to make a algorithm for finding
criminals but made a smile detector instead. "Smile or go to jail" <--- The life of a woman.
Weather algorithms will go down due to other satellites. But also Global Warming
6/7
Today I turned in the final observing project. I had such a fun time with this class! Thank you so much for such an amazing quarter.
Last Friday Joke: Do you know what you should do it you're attacked by a group of clowns? Go for the juggler.
Thank you :)
